BOP Direct-Hire Authority Act

To provide direct hire authority to the Director of the Bureau of Prisons.

Introduced May 13, 2025

Latest action (May 13, 2025) Referred to the Committee on the Judiciary, and in addition to the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, for a period to be subsequently determined by the Speaker, in each case for consideration of such provisions as fall within the jurisdiction of the committee concerned.

Summary

This bill grants the Director of the Bureau of Prisons direct-hire authority to appoint qualified candidates to competitive service positions at BOP facilities without following standard federal civil service hiring procedures. This expedited hiring authority allows the BOP to fill positions more quickly than normal rules would allow. The authority expires automatically when 96 percent of the total number of competitive service positions at BOP facilities (measured as of the date of enactment) are filled.
