Student Loan Tax Elimination Act
To amend the Higher Education Act of 1965 to eliminate origination fees on Federal Direct loans.
Summary
This bill amends the Higher Education Act to eliminate origination fees on Federal Direct loans. Origination fees are charges deducted from loan disbursements when a loan is first made. The change applies to Federal Direct loans for which the first disbursement occurs, or consolidation loan applications are received, on or after July 1 following enactment of the bill. Beginning on that date, borrowers taking out new Federal Direct loans will not have origination fees subtracted from their loan amounts.
