Summary

The bill amends the Richard B. Russell National School Lunch Act to establish new restrictions on foods served in federally funded school lunch programs. Schools would be prohibited from serving ultraprocessed foods as defined by the NOVA food classification system, group 4. The bill also bans foods containing specific additives and artificial dyes, including potassium bromate, propylparaben, titanium dioxide, brominated vegetable oil, and certain approved food colorings (yellow 5, yellow 6, blue 1, blue 2, green 3, red 3, and red dye 40). These prohibitions would apply to all meals served under the national school lunch program. The changes are presented as amendments to the nutritional and other requirements that schools must meet to participate in the federal lunch program.
