HR 2228 Introduced Re-checks Congress.gov for new actions and updates the bill's status, and fills in any sponsors, committees, or related bills that are missing. It does not re-pull sponsors/cosponsors/committees/related — those rarely change — and it skips all work if nothing has changed upstream, so it's cheap to click.
Survivor Benefits Fairness Act
To amend title 38, United States Code, to adjust the effective date of certain reductions and discontinuances of compensation, dependency and indemnity compensation, and pension under the laws administered by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs.
Summary
This bill amends Veterans Affairs law to change the effective date when VA benefits reduction or discontinuance takes effect due to marriage, remarriage, or death. Currently, benefits are reduced or discontinued as of the last day of the month before the qualifying event; the bill would change this to the last day of the month during which the qualifying event occurs. This change applies to compensation, dependency and indemnity compensation (survivor benefits), and pension benefits. The amendment is effective for any marriage, remarriage, or death occurring on or after the date of enactment.
