Cybersecurity for Rural Water Systems Act
To include cybersecurity technical assistance in the national rural water and wastewater circuit rider program of Department of Agriculture.
Summary
The bill adds cybersecurity technical assistance to the Department of Agriculture's national rural water and wastewater circuit rider program, which provides technical support to rural water systems. Rural water systems serving fewer than 10,000 persons can now receive assistance to assess their cybersecurity capabilities and implement cybersecurity plans, procedures, and technologies to protect against cyber threats. The bill increases annual program funding from $25 million to $32.5 million and extends the program from fiscal years 2019-2023 to fiscal years 2026-2030, with $7.5 million of the annual allocation dedicated specifically to providing cybersecurity technical assistance. This expansion addresses cyber vulnerabilities in small rural water systems that often lack resources for independent cybersecurity assessment and implementation.
