HR 2035
Passed House Re-checks Congress.gov for new actions and updates the bill's status, and fills in any sponsors, committees, or related bills that are missing. It does not re-pull sponsors/cosponsors/committees/related — those rarely change — and it skips all work if nothing has changed upstream, so it's cheap to click.

American Cargo for American Ships Act

Introduced Mar 11, 2025

Latest action (Jun 10, 2025) Received in the Senate and Read twice and referred to the Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation.

Summary

This bill amends federal maritime law to require that when the Department of Transportation procures, contracts for, obtains, or provides financing for equipment, materials, or commodities, 100 percent of the gross tonnage that can be transported by ocean vessels must be carried on privately-owned commercial vessels of the United States. The requirement applies when U.S. vessels are available at fair and reasonable rates and is calculated separately for different vessel types (dry bulk carriers, dry cargo liners, and tankers). The Secretary of Transportation or the recipient of federal financing must take necessary and practicable steps to ensure this requirement is met. The bill aims to ensure fair and reasonable participation of U.S. commercial vessels in cargoes by geographic areas.
